Resumen

Los días 28 y 29 de enero del presente año de 2007, se recibieron en la Academia noticias, vía e-mail, la primera de Ben Cohen, el día 28 y la segunda del Académico Jaime Gómez González, el día 29, sobre la muerte, el día 21 de ese mes, en la ciudad de Mineapolis, Minnesota, a los 82 años de edad, del Señor Académico Profesor Doctor Fernando Torres Restrepo, eminente neurólogo, especializado en electroencefalografía, tanto clínica como experimental. A pesar de no haber tenido el privilegio de conocerlo – aunque si mucho a su familia, estoy enterado, como a continuación lo resumiré, de su brillante hoja de vida, me solidarizo con quienes lo sienten en el alma, habiéndolo conocido personalmente, en especial los Académicos Jaime Gómez González y Alfredo Jácome Roca, y los pocos miembros de su familia residentes en Colombia, a quines en nombre de la Academia Nacional de Medicina, de su Junta Directiva y en el mío propio, hago llegar con estas líneas el más sentido mensaje de condolencia y el reconocimiento de que la desaparición de Torres Restrepo representa una inmensa pérdida para nuestra sociedad, para la ciencia médica y para nuestra Corporación. Hijo mayor del Profesor Calixto Torres Umaña y de doña Isabel Restrepo Gaviria, nació el doctor Torres Restrepo en la ciudad de París(1,2), en 1924(3), el 29 de noviembre de ese año(1), cuando su padre realizaba su especialización en pediatría en la Ciudad Luz(4,5). “Los Torres – anota Gómez González – fueron una familia de ilustres médicos boyacenses, entre ellos: José Calixto Torres Rincón, David Torres Solano (1827- 1879), Severo Torres Barreto (1854 – 1895), Julio Z. Torres (1861 – 1936) y Calixto Torres Umaña (1885 – 1960)”(5). Del primer matrimonio de su madre, con el ciudadano alemán don Carl Westendorp(6), quedó una hermana media, doña Guerda Westendorp Restrepo de Núñez. Hijo también del Profesor Tórres Umaña fue su hermano menor, el dolorosamente célebre cura guerrillero, miembro del autodenominado Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), dado de baja en combate, por efectivos del Ejército de Colombia, en las montañas de Santander, en 19662, a los 37 años de edad: el Padre Camilo Torres Restrepo. Sus estudios de bachillerato los cursó en el Colegio Alemán(7) y su formación profesional la realizó en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia(4,5), entre 1941 y 1946. Entre el mes de julio de 1947 y el de diciembre de 1948, el joven Torres realizó su internado en medicina y cirugía, en el Hospital de San José(1). La Facultad de Medicina le otorgó el título de médico y cirujano, en 1948, con un trabajo de tesis titulado “Estudio comparativo de desarrollo y la morbosidad infantil en Bogotá”, en el mes de diciembre de ese año(1), trabajo que en 1949 publicó la Revista de Pediatría y Puericultura en Bogotá(8). Entre ese mes de diciembre de 1948 y el de marzo de 1949, Torres Restrepo trabajó, como residente de cirugía, en el mismo Hospital de San José(1). En el mes de marzo de 1949, viajó a la República Argentina donde, en el Instituto de Medicina Experimental de Buenos Aires, trabajó como Asistente en Neurocirugía, hasta el mes de septiembre de 1950(1): desafortunadamente, durante su práctica desarrolló una intensa reacción alérgica a los guantes quirúrgicos, lo que le obligó a abandonar la cirugía, razón por la cual se dedicó, finalmente, a la neurología clínica(2). En el mes de octubre de 1950(1), Torres Restrepo se trasladó a la ciudad de Baltimore, a la Universidad de John Hopkins, donde se inició en la investigación neurofisiológica(2,4,5). En dicha Universidad permaneció entre el mes de octubre de 1950 y el de junio de1952, dedicado por completo a la investigación(1). En el mes de julio de 1952, pasó al National Institute of Health en el Johns Hopkins Hospital, en la misma ciudad de Baltimore, donde continuó su trabajo en investigación, también de tiempo completo, hasta el mes de junio de 1953(1). Del mes de julio de 1953, al de junio de 1954 permaneció, como Residente Asistente, en la División de Neuropsiquiatría del Montefiori Hospital del Bronx, en la ciudad de Nueva York(1) y, desde el mes de julio de 1954, hasta el de junio de 1955, trabajó como Residente de la misma División de Neuropsiquiatría del mencionado Hospital y, simultáneamente, fue Asistente en Neurología de Columbia University de Nueva York(1). Allí, anota Ben Cohen, “complementó su especialidad, después de lo cual se mudó a las “Twin Cities”, donde continuó sus estudios y practicó su especialidad, lo mismo que en Nueva York y Bogotá” (2). Al finalizar sus trabajos en el Montefiori, Torres Restrepo regresó a Bogotá donde, entre el mes de julio de 1955 y el mismo mes de 1956, ejerció en la practica privada en neurología y electroencefalografía, tuvo a su cargo la Dirección del Laboratorio de EEG del Hospital de San Juan de Dios, fue Consultante en neurología del Hospital de San José de esa ciudad y del Hospital Infantil Lorencita Villegas de Santos(1). Jaime Gómez González, uno de sus pocos discí pulos en Bogotá, anotó: “Pasó además Torres Restrepo un tiempo en el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neurológicas de Bethesda, Maryland, también practicando en el ámbito de la neurofisiología experimental, después de lo cual se trasladó a la ciudad de Nueva York, lugar donde, en el Hospital Montefiori del Bronx, hizo su residencia formal en Neurología y en Electroencefalografía”(4,5), que se constituiría en su subespecialidad definitiva. Agrega Gómez González que “En 1955 regresó a Bogotá, donde se posesionó como Director del Laboratorio de Electroencefalografía del Hospital de San Juan de Dios, hospital universitario en el cual alcanzó a formar a varios compatriotas como profesionales de nuestra medicina en esa subespecialidad”(5). Sin embargo, su permanencia en la ciudad de Bogotá fue muy corta: por esos días aceptó el nombramiento de Instructor de Neurología en la Universidad de Minnesota, se trasladó definitivamente a los Estados Unidos y se estableció en la ciudad de Minneapolis, donde realizó su carrera profesional, clínica, docente y de investigador(4,5). Así, del mes de septiembre de 1956 al de junio de 1958, ocupó el cargo de Instructor en Neurología de University of Minnesota Medical School, en la ciudad de Minneapolis(1)...
