Relación entre longevidad y tiempo generacional en mamíferos

La longevidad, definida como el límite máximo de esperanza de vida más allá del promedio de una especie en un momento dado, es un fenómeno biológico complejo que se ha estudiado durante décadas. Este artículo de revisión explora la relación entre la longevidad y el tiempo de generación en los mamíferos, centrándose en la literatura que lo respalda y qué implicación biológica tiene esta relación. El tiempo de generación se refiere al intervalo de tiempo entre generaciones sucesivas y está estrechamente vinculado a la reproducción y las estrategias de vida de una especie. Sostenemos que la longevidad puede considerarse una herramienta, más que un propósito, que puede seleccionarse mediante la reproducción. En este sentido, la reproducción, medida en este artículo a través del tiempo generacional, podría actuar como un mecanismo de selección positiva para la longevidad. Considerando factores genéticos y ambientales, exploramos varias teorías que respaldan esta relación entre longevidad y tiempo de generación. Un análisis crítico de la literatura y las bases de datos existentes propone finalmente una relación lineal positiva entre la longevidad y el tiempo generacional a través del Cociente TG/L.
