Terapia nutricional médica hipocalórica e hiperproteica en enfermos en estado crítico: un homenaje al profesor José Félix Patiño

Resumen

Este artículo rinde un homenaje al profesor José Félix Patiño Restrepo y sus aportes fundamentales para un mejor entendimiento de los trastornos metabólicos causados por enfermedades médicas o quirúrgicas agudas y el papel que la terapia médica nutricional (TMN) desempeña en el cuidado de esta población de pacientes. A mi entender, el profesor
Patiño y su equipo en Bogotá, Colombia, fueron los primeros en señalar que unas bajas cantidades de calorías y una ingesta moderada de proteína eran beneficiosas y necesarias para tratar los trastornos metabólicos vistos con enfermedades agudas críticas, lo que rompe el paradigma de larga data de que la desnutrición observada durante la enfermedad podría resolverse
simplemente evitando el déficit calórico.
